IPOH: Perak State Assembly Speaker Datuk Mohammad Zahir Abdul Khalid has dismissed a motion seeking to shorten the six-month suspension of Opposition leader Razman Zakaria.
The motion, filed by Sungai Manik assemblyman Datuk Zainol Fadzi Paharudin, was ruled inadmissible under the relevant Standing Orders.
“Although the motion was specific, it pertained mainly to the personal position of the Gunung Semanggol representative and did not affect his role as an elected lawmaker.
“Therefore, the element of urgency does not arise, and the matter is more academic in nature.
“After due consideration, I reject the motion,” Mohammad Zahir said at the assembly sitting held at the Perak Darul Ridzuan Building on Thursday (Sept 11).
He noted that Razman’s suspension had been endorsed by the House following findings of the Rights and Privileges Committee.
“The assemblyman will be able to attend the sitting again in November once his suspension ends in October,” he said.
On Tuesday, Zainol, who is also the acting Opposition whip chief, submitted the motion just an hour before the sitting began, arguing that the penalty was excessive for a first offence.
Razman, the Gunung Semanggol assemblyman and Perak PAS commissioner, was suspended in April following a motion by DAP’s Bercham representative Ong Boon Piow.
He had been accused of making slanderous and racially charged remarks during the previous sitting, including alleging in December that Malaysian citizens had flown Chinese national flags at an event in Teluk Intan.
