SEGAMAT: Fifteen government buildings have been identified as having suffered minor damage with an estimated repair cost of RM550,500, following a series of earthquakes that hit the district last month, says Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan.
The Deputy Works Minister said the findings was the result of inspections carried out on buildings involving Hospital Segamat, Bandar Putra health clinic, Segamat community college, schools and government quarters.
“Most of the buildings have existing cracks and the earthquake had caused more cracks to appear. However, the damage did not affect the integrity of the buildings’ structure.
“These buildings are still safe to use and do not pose a safety risk. Nevertheless, building users have been reminded to always monitor surrounding conditions,” he told reporters after a visit to the affected buildings, Bernama reported.
Ahmad added that the Segamat district office received 62 reports of minor damage to private homes and two surau, but the estimated losses have not been finalised.
A series of tremors occurred in Segamat last month, including a 4.1-magnitude earthquake, followed by several smaller aftershocks.
Ahmad said inspections found the earthquake incidents did not damage roads and bridges.
