SHAH ALAM: In declaring that bringing down party leaders through statutory declarations (SD) is unconstitutional, Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin warns it will not be just him, but there will also be other leaders who will be forced out through such a move.
“I hear that there are those who are collecting signatures to overthrow the party president. This is an act which goes against the party constitution.
“If the president can be brought down with a collection of signatures, those (Bersatu leaders) on the stage with me can also be overthrown the same way,” said the former prime minister and Perikatan Nasional chairman in his keynote address at the party’s eighth annual general assembly at Ideal Convention Centre last night.
As Muhyiddin was delivering his address, a delegate began shouting that the allegations were untrue.
“It’s not true!” the delegate shouted.
Security personnel then tried to calm down the delegate and a brief scuffle broke out.
The rest of the delegates stood up and shouted “Long live Tan Sri”.
Prior to the party assembly, there was talk of alleged SDs among Bersatu division leaders calling for Muhyiddin to step down as its president.
Muhyiddin reminded the members that the party has a constitution and regulations.
“Obey the party’s constitution if we want our party to be orderly, proper, harmonious and peaceful.
“Stop the slander and incitement. Avoid conflicts among ourselves. Discard all negative attitudes that weaken us.
“Remember, our party did not begin with wealth and money, nor with promises of positions and status. We started with nothing,” he said.
He said Bersatu members must have a sincere spirit and a strong will to fight for the salvation of the nation.
In his speech, Muhyiddin said Bersatu is fully prepared for the coming Sabah state election.
He added that Bersatu will fight for Sabah’s right to receive its 40% net revenue entitlement in accordance with the Malaysia Agreement 1963 and the provisions of Articles 112C and 112D of the Federal Constitution.
“Bersatu and Perikatan will also focus on efforts to drive Sabah’s development, eradicate poverty, expand basic infrastructure facilities, improve the educational achievements of Sabah’s children, provide better job opportunities, increase the people’s income and protect the welfare of the people in Sabah,” he added.
