Court orders teacher who allegedly slashed wife to psych evaluation


BALIK PULAU: A teacher who allegedly slashed his wife in the neck has been ordered by the Sessions Court here to be sent to Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta in Perak for assessment.

Judge Ahzal Fariz Ahmad Khairuddin made the order following Deputy Public Prosecutor R.Lushani’s application to send Muhammad Nazmi Izzuddin Muhamad Zubairi, 30, when he failed to understand the charges read to him.

Ahzal Fariz made the order under Section 342(3) of the Criminal Procedure Code.

"The court orders the accused to be sent to Hospital Bahagia for evaluation," he said.

Muhammad Nazmi was charged with attempting to murder his wife by using a knife, knowing that such an act could cause the death of Hanis Sofea binti Hamdan, 28.

The offence was allegedly committed in a room of a house at Taman Tunas Muda in Sungai Ara at about 5.45am last Wednesday (Aug 27).

The charge is framed under Section 307 of the Penal Code, and the accused faces the maximum prison term of 20 years if convicted.

The suspect allegedly slashed the neck of his 28-year-old wife, who is also a teacher, before injuring himself with a knife in the couple’s bedroom at their home.

The victim’s mother, who heard her daughter’s screams, rushed in to find the woman pinned down.

She quickly pulled her daughter off the bed to save her.

It is learn that debt problems were believed to have triggered the quarrel before the suspect attacked his wife.

The suspect had reportedly taken a bank loan for stock investment in addition to instalment payments for goods purchased through e-commerce platforms.

The accused was represented by lawyers Muhaimin Hashim, Yazid Khairul Azman, and Ismat Arif Abu Hassan.
