SARIKEI: Sarawak has been hailed as the country's best example of multi-racial unity, with its diversity serving as a pillar of strength and shared identity, says Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
Speaking at the state-level National Day celebration on Sunday (August 31), Abang Johari said the state’s racial and cultural diversity had never been an obstacle but rather a source of harmony that had enabled Sarawak to grow rapidly.
“Sarawak is the best example for Malaysia in the context of multi-racial unity. In this land of light, racial and cultural diversity has never been an obstacle, but rather a source of strength and shared identity,” he said.
He stressed that the state government has always upheld inclusiveness in all policies and programmes to ensure no citizen is left behind or marginalised from the flow of development.
“I call on all Sarawakians, regardless of background, to continue to unite, innovate and be competitive in facing future challenges. Let us all take advantage of all available opportunities, improve our knowledge and skills, and play an active role in the development of Sarawak,” he added.
Abang Johari said this was in line with the state’s vision of transforming its economy as a true reflection of the meaning of national independence.
“It also symbolises the freedom of our people in determining our own destiny and future, with full confidence, identity and determination to take Sarawak further forward,” he said.
He urged Sarawakians to strengthen their commitment to building a prosperous and progressive state where the fruits of development could be shared by all.
“Let us make this National Day a time to strengthen the spirit of patriotism and love for the homeland. Let us together build a more progressive and united Sarawak and Malaysia,” he said.
The Premier of Sarawak also outlined the state’s progress and future plans under the Post-Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which focuses on economic prosperity, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability.
He highlighted major achievements in infrastructure such as bridges, roads, electricity, and clean water supply, including the creation of Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd and the takeover of Bintulu Port Authority.
Key milestones also include the establishment of Sarawak’s own airline, AirBorneo (set to begin operations in January 2026), and the acquisition of a majority stake in Affin Bank to boost financial access for local businesses.
On energy, the Premier emphasised Sarawak’s role as Malaysia’s largest gas producer and leading LNG exporter. He launched the Sarawak Gas Roadmap to expand downstream industries, targeting RM120bil in output and RM300bil in investments. He also reinforced Sarawak’s green agenda through renewable energy initiatives, including the Hydrogen Economy Roadmap and Energy Transition Policy, aiming for 15GW of green energy by 2035 and net zero by 2050.
In education, he announced that Sarawak will be the first state in Malaysia to implement free higher education from next year, ensuring equitable access and producing a skilled workforce for new industries. This is complemented by scholarships, loans, and other education funds.
He stressed the importance of digital transformation, highlighting investments in AI, data centres, and fibre networks. Achievements include the development of KETEQ AI, the world’s first edge AI power converter prototype, and the establishment of the Sarawak Artificial Intelligence Centre as a hub for innovation, R&D, and talent development.
