Sanusi stays out of PAS veep race again

PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor has announced that he will be sitting out of the party's vice-presidency race at PAS' 71st annual muktamar.

The Kedah Mentri Besar however, said he would only defend his position as a member of the PAS central committee member position for the 2025-2027 term.

“I am not contesting for the vice-presidency post, only for the central working committee member,” he said briefly when met at the Merdeka boat parade programme in conjunction with the 2025 National Day celebration at the state museum, as reported by Sinar Harian on Saturday (Aug 30).

He also declined to elaborate on the reason for rejecting the nomination, which marks the third time he has done so.

On Thursday (Aug 28), the PAS election director appeared to hint that he did not wish to contest for any party post, hinting that the three PAS incumbent vice-presidents should remain.

“Those who are already used to the position and have been doing their job well should just continue. In PAS, there is no competition or rivalry over positions.

“My attitude is the same, I will not compete with anyone. Honestly, there’s nothing hidden or implied,” he said.

In the 2023 and 2021 party elections, Sanusi also rejected the nomination despite being declared eligible after being nominated by several PAS divisions nationwide.

In 2023, he received the highest number of votes for the central committee member, with 1,098 votes.

Sanusi was among four candidates announced as eligible to contest the vice-presidency post, alongside the three incumbents - Terengganu Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar, Kelantan Deputy Mentri Besar Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah and Bagan Serai MP Datuk Idris Ahmad.
