
As populations age and chronic diseases become increasingly prevalent, healthcare systems around the world are facing one of their greatest challenges. Successful management of these conditions requires prevention, early diagnosis, patient education, rehabilitation and sustained lifestyle changes.
Recognising this shift, healthcare education is evolving to prepare professionals who can contribute to long-term, patient-centred care from different but complementary perspectives.
At Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia (NUMed), this philosophy is reflected through its Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), BSc (Honours) Biomedical Sciences and upcoming BSc (Honours) Sport and Exercise Science programmes.
Together, these programmes prepare graduates to contribute across the continuum of chronic disease management, from scientific discovery and clinical care to prevention and rehabilitation.
Every advancement in chronic disease management begins with understanding how disease develops. Behind improvements in diagnosis, treatment and prevention are biomedical scientists who investigate the molecular, genetic and physiological mechanisms that drive chronic illnesses.
"Biomedical scientists play a critical role in advancing healthcare through research and discovery,” said NUMed School of Biomedical, Nutritional and Sport Sciences head and Biomedical Sciences dean Assoc Prof Dr Madihah Rushaidhi.

“Our Biomedical Sciences students complete their first two years in Malaysia before progressing to our UK campus for research-led teaching and an intensive laboratory research project.
“This international pathway provides graduates with strong scientific foundations and hands-on research experience.”
Scientific discovery forms the foundation of healthcare, but effective chronic disease management depends on clinicians who can translate knowledge into personalised patient care.
NUMed’s MBBS programme prepares future doctors with comprehensive medical knowledge and extensive clinical experience, equipping them to diagnose, treat and manage chronic diseases throughout a patient's life.
“Our curriculum is designed to develop confident, patient-centred doctors. Students begin building their clinical skills from the outset and gain early exposure to real patients, while developing competencies in clinical research, communication, critical decision-making, reflective practice and evidence-based medicine,” said clinical affairs dean Prof Dr Harinarayan Radhakrishna.
“These experiences prepare them to deliver compassionate, high-quality care throughout a patient's lifelong healthcare journey," he said.
Supporting health beyond the clinic
Managing chronic disease does not end once a patient leaves the consultation room. As healthcare increasingly embraces preventive medicine and rehabilitation, exercise has become an integral component of long-term disease management.
Reflecting this need, NUMed’s upcoming BSc (Honours) Sport and Exercise Science is designed to prepare graduates who can apply exercise science to improve health, physical function and overall well-being.
“Students will develop a solid foundation in key disciplines including physiology, nutrition, psychology and biomechanics.
“These competencies enable graduates to design safe, evidence-based exercise programmes for individuals living with conditions such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and musculoskeletal disorders,” said Madihah.
