All public infrastructure unaffected by quake, says Johor exco member

JOHOR BARU: All infrastructure and dams in Johor are stable and undamaged after the mild earthquake that struck Segamat early Sunday (Aug 24), says state executive councillor Mohd Fazli Mohamad Salleh.

The state public works, transport, infrastructure and communications committee chairman said an initial inspection by the Public Works Department (JKR) and Irrigation and Drainage Department (DID) were carried out within a 5km radius from the epicentre of the quake.

"Forty-seven bridges under state roads as well as 14 bridges and 10 overpasses under the federal road were undamaged.

"In addition, the safety levels of dams under DID, including the Bekok Dam in Segamat, Sembrong Dam in Batu Pahat and Macap Dam in Kluang, are also stable and under control," he said in a statement on Monday (Aug 25).

He added that the state government assures the public that Johor JKR and state DID would continue monitoring to ensure safety.

"JKR will carry out continuous monitoring of all bridges, overpasses and roads in the affected areas.

"While DID will also ensure dam safety remains under control. Should there be any impact or structural damage, immediate action will be taken by the authorities," he said.

Mohd Fazli also reminded the public that all official information and updates would only be issued through the relevant government agencies to avoid confusion or speculation.

Two tremors were detected on Sunday, the first a 4.1-magnitude quake in Segamat at 6.13am, and the second a 2.8-magnitude quake at 9am in the Yong Peng area near Batu Pahat, about 28km northwest of Kluang.
