5.5 magnitude earthquake strikes off Japan's Hachijo Island, shaking felt in Tokyo


TOKYO: (Bernama-Xinhua) An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.5 struck off Hachijo Island, some 280 kilometres (km) south of Tokyo, the Japan Meteorological Agency said on Friday (Aug 21), reported Xinhua.

The shaking was felt in the Japanese capital.

The temblor occurred at around 9.02 pm local time at a depth of about 60 km, measuring 3 on Japan's seismic intensity scale of 7 in Miyake Island and Mikura Island, the weather agency said.

The quake's epicentre was located at a latitude of 33.7 degrees north and a longitude of 140.5 degrees east.
