More Malaysians with HIV receive antiretroviral therapy last year, Parliament heard

KUALA LUMPUR: More people living with HIV were receiving antiretroviral therapy (ART) in Malaysia last year, the Dewan Rakyat was told.

According to the Health Ministry, 50,694 individuals living with HIV have been receiving ART in Malaysia last year, compared to 48,765 individuals in 2023.

“This is an increase of 3.8% compared to 2023,” said the Health Ministry in a parliamentary written reply dated Aug 18.

The Health Ministry said that since PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) was introduced in January 2023, it has been offered at 35 public health clinics.

Up till June this year, a total of 9,309 individuals have received PrEP, it said.

The Health Ministry was responding to Datuk Ahmad Saad (PN-Pokok Sena), who asked about measures to address the rise of HIV in the country.
