KUALA LUMPUR: The Climate Change Bill is being reviewed by the Attorney General’s Chambers, and is targeted for tabling later this year, says Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani.
The acting Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Minister said they are looking to table it during the next Dewan Rakyat sitting in October.
“Once the bill is finalised, we will table it. If there are no major changes, we will table it after Budget 2026 is tabled.” he said during question time in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday (Aug 18).
Johari was responding to a supplementary question by Datuk Seri Hasni Mohammad (BN-Simpang Renggam) who asked about progress updates on the much talked about Climate Change Bill.
Previously, environmental activists and other professionals in Malaysia were reported pressing for the Climate Change Bill to be tabled in Parliament soon, making environmental rights a human rights concern.
On another matter, Johari said there are currently no mining activities in permanent forest reserves.
In a related development, he said there is a team of scientists and researchers led by the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) currently conducting research at a site in Labis, Johor.
“They are studying the permanent forest reserve there and what must be done before, during and after mining activities.
“The outcome will allow all MPs to know what standard operating procedures must be followed to ensure no untoward outcomes,” he said.
