KOTA KINABALU: Sabah is allocating about RM600,000 for gig workers in the e-hailing sector to open Employees Provident Fund (EPF) accounts.
Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said a total of 11,109 applications have been received from e-hailing workers to contribute to the EPF.
“I would like to announce that the... RM600,000 (is) to assist those (e-hailing workers) who have yet to open EPF accounts,” he said at Sabah Moto Day 8.0 at the Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) Drill Field near here on Sunday (Aug 17).
On the event, he said the large presence of around 60,000 riders and visitors proved that motorcycling activities continue to hold a place in the hearts of youths and the public.
“I am impressed to see the support shown by participants from all over Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei, regardless of age, race and religion, coming together to share the same passion,” Hajiji said.
Advising participants to prioritise safety while on the road, he hoped the gathering would help create greater awareness of its importance among two-wheeler enthusiasts.
Hajiji said the state government viewed youths as assets, with various initiatives implemented to develop human capital.
He said it had spent a total of RM1.33bil – RM848.26mil for education assistance and RM485mil for talent and skills development programmes – from 2021 to 2025.
After his speech, Hajiji led the participants in prayers for the late Zara Qairina Mahathir, the 13-year-old student who died on July 17, a day after being found unconscious on the ground floor of her school dormitory in Papar.
