Bukit Aman says Zara Qairina’s exhumation follows investigation review

KUALA LUMPUR: The need to exhume Zara Qairina Mahathir’s body is based on the evaluation of the investigation paper by the Attorney General’s Chambers (AGC), says Bukit Aman.

In a statement on Saturday (Aug 9), Criminal Investigation Department director Comm Datuk M Kumar said the report was studied by the AGC.

“The findings from that study led to the need to exhume Zara Qairina’s body to enable a post-mortem,” he said.

“This is to obtain additional information required to complete investigations into the case,” added Comm Kumar.

He added that the exhumation and post-mortem will be conducted as soon as possible under Sections 331 and 335 of the Criminal Procedure Code and said that

the police will soon refer the investigation paper back to the Attorney General’s Chambers.

Zara fell from the third floor of her religious school hostel in Papar and was found at 3 pm on July 16.

She died the following day at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu.

Family members believe her death was linked to bullying at the school hostel.

Zara’s mother, through her lawyers, has asked for an inquest and for her body to be exhumed for a post-mortem amid the #JusticeForZara campaign.

On Saturday (August 9), the Attorney General’s Chambers disclosed that it had directed the police to exhume Zara’s body for a post-mortem.
