Students arrested for allegedly stealing grandfather's savings

Two students have been arrested for allegedly stealing RM40,000 from their grandfather's savings stored under his mattress in Tawau district.

The 60-year-old, who had been saving for years, discovered the theft at Kg Durian, Merotai, around 7 p.m. on Monday (July 21).

He found that RM40,000 of his RM60,000 savings was missing and immediately informed his son.

A police report followed, said Tawau OCPD Asst Comm Jasmin Hussin.

Initial investigations revealed the victim kept his money under his mattress in his room.

"Two girls aged 13 and 15 - the man's granddaughters - were brought in to assist with investigations," he said, adding that the exact missing amount is being verified.

ACP Jasmin advised the public against keeping large sums of money in unsafe places to prevent theft, damage, or other losses.
