Anwar: 'I will not step down, I don't steal money'

BAYAN LEPAS: "I will not step down, I don't steal the people's money," says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim when commenting on the opposition's call for a change in the country's leadership.

Anwar insisted that he was only fulfilling his responsibilities as Prime Minister, reported Sinar Harian.

"When a person is in power, they must be trustworthy. If I continue with the old way, how long will it take for the country to progress and be free of corruption?

"That's why we changed the policy. Everything must go through a tender process.

"If I steal, you can tell me to step. But this, I don't steal people's money," he said when delivering a speech at the Teluk Kumbar Civil Complex Groundbreaking Ceremony here on Saturday (July 19).

Anwar also announced an allocation of RM5mil for the South West district to develop basic facilities.

He insisted that any change in national leadership must be made in an orderly manner and through the legal channels of Parliament.

"This country is safe. Value this peace.

"Use Parliament to criticise. If there is enough support, bring a motion (for a vote of no confidence). That's the way.

"Pull support from any member of Parliament. If I lose, I will resign properly. That is a peaceful and honourable way," he said.

He added that as long as there was no change through a legal process, the people's mandate should be respected.

"Otherwise, wait for the election," he said.
