Woman killed, 13 injured after truck plunges into ravine in Lahad Datu

KOTA KINABALU: A woman was killed while 13 others were injured when the pickup truck they were travelling in plunged into a ravine at the Permai Estate in Lahad Datu, early Wednesday (July 16).

The group, a few of whom were seated in the truck’s cargo bed, was believed to be on the way to work before the 5.30am accident when the driver lost control and plunged the vehicle into a 15m-deep ravine.

Lahad Datu Fire Station Chief Sumsoa Rashid said they received an emergency call at around 5.53am, and their team reached the scene at 6.08am.

“The victims were seven men, a boy and seven women, and all were assisted out of the vehicle by passersby,” he said in a statement.

He said firemen arrived at the scene to bring the victims up to the roadside to prepare them to get medical attention.

Unfortunately, health officials at the scene declared a 33-year-old woman dead and her body was handed over to the cops for further action, Sumsoa said.

“Thirteen of the others were injured and have been taken to the hospital by ambulance for further treatment,” he said, adding that the driver escaped unhurt.

He said investigations into the cause of the accident were being carried out.
