MERSING: A 24-year-old motorcyclist was killed, while her pillion rider was injured, after their vehicle hit a car and skidded into a drain here on Sunday (July 13).

Mersing Fire and Rescue Department operations commander Mohd Shamsuri Shafai said they received a distress call at 12.20am about the incident at Jalan Ismail, in front of Taman Laut Mersing.

“A total of eight firemen and two fire engines were deployed to the scene, located about 1km away, to carry out rescue operations.

“The accident involved a motorcycle that skidded into a drain.

“A woman was found dead at the scene, while a 23-year-old woman sustained injuries and was (taken to the hospital) for treatment,” he said in a statement.

Shamsuri added that the victim’s body was handed over to the police for further action.

When contacted, Mersing OCPD Supt Abdul Razak Abdullah Sani confirmed the incident.

“Preliminary investigations found that the motorcycle was attempting to overtake a car that was turning right into a junction but failed, hitting the rear of the vehicle before skidding off the road.

“The victim suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, while the pillion rider sustained injuries to the left thigh and is receiving treatment at Hospital Mersing.

"The 51-year-old car driver was uninjured,” he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
