RM2.9bil tourism gain fuelled by S. Korea

SEOUL: Malaysia recorded 553,165 tourist arrivals from South Korea in 2024, contributing RM2.9bil to the country’s tourism revenue.

Tourism Malaysia Seoul director Kamilia Hani Abdul Halim said this figure is expected to continue rising next year, especially in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026).

“For next year, we are increasing promotional activities and collaborations with tourism operators in South Korea, particularly major travel agencies here.

“We will also strengthen cooperation with airlines and expand our outreach through social media, newspaper publicity and other print media,” she told reporters after attending the MYTRA B2B Titanium Circle Korea 2025 programme in Myeongdong yesterday.

Kamilia Hani noted that South Korea is the seventh-largest contributor of international tourists to Malaysia, Bernama reported.

She added that Tourism Malaysia Seoul is currently promoting beach and island destinations in Johor and Sabah, along with educational and halal tourism to South Koreans.

“Tourism Malaysia Seoul is also positioning Malaysia as a Muslim-friendly tourism destination.”

She congratulated the Malaysian Muslim Travel Agency Association for its efforts in promoting Malaysia to South Koreans, adding that such initiatives align with the government’s aspiration to attract more tourists to Malaysia in conjunction with VM2026.

During the programme, 41 Malaysian travel agency operators held meetings with 50 South Korean travel agencies.
