Bracelet theft lands expectant mum in jail

MELAKA: A five-month pregnant woman was sentenced to three years’ jail by the Sessions Court in Ayer Keroh here for robbing a woman of a RM12,000 gold bracelet.

Judge Haderiah Siri meted out the sentence yesterday after the accused Jasila Jamaruddin, 31, pleaded guilty when the charge was read out.

According to the charge sheet, Jasila had snatched the bracelet from the hand of a 42-year-old woman in front of an eatery on Jalan Kerambit 4, Bandar Baru Sungai Udang, at around 11am on May 28.

The charge was framed under Section 392 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to 14 years and a fine or whipping, upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Wardah Ishhar urged the court to impose a sentence that reflected the seriousness of the offence.

However, the unrepresented accused pleaded for leniency, citing her pregnancy and the fact that her four young children are currently under the care of the Welfare Department.

The court ordered her sentence to run from the date of her arrest on June 10.

In separate proceedings before Judge Rohatul Akmar Abdullah, Muhammad Aliff Aiman Zaini, who is the 24-year-old husband of Jasila, was sentenced to a year in prison after pleading guilty to receiving and disposing of the bracelet at a pawn shop on Jalan Kiara 1, Kawasan Perniagaan Kiara Semenyih, Hulu Langat in Selangor at about 4pm on May 28.

Separately, the couple was also sentenced to five months’ jail after they pleaded guilty before magistrate Uthman Abd Ghani to stealing various items valued at RM1,100 from a homestay.

The offence was committed at about 1am in a residential unit at a service apartment in Kota Laksamana here on April 26.

They were charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code read together with Section 34 which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years, a fine, and whipping for a second or subsequent offence, upon conviction.
