MELAKA: A five-month pregnant woman was sentenced to three years’ in jail by the Sessions Court in Ayer Keroh here for robbing a female victim of a gold bracelet worth RM12,000.
Judge Haderiah Siri meted out the sentence after the accused, Jasila Jamaruddin, 31, pleaded guilty when the charge was read on Friday (July 4).
According to the charge sheet, the accused was charged with committing the robbery by snatching the gold bracelet from the hand of a 42-year-old woman in front of an eatery on Jalan Kerambit 4, Bandar Baru Sungai Udang, here at about 11am on May 28.
The charge was framed under Section 392 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of up to 14 years and a fine or whipping, upon conviction.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Wardah Ishhar requested a sentence that reflected the seriousness of the offence.
The accused, who was unrepresented, pleaded for leniency because she is five months pregnant and has four young children under the care of the Social Welfare Department.
The court ordered her sentence to run concurrently from the date of her arrest on June 10.
Meanwhile, in separate proceedings before Judge Rohatul Akmar Abdullah, the accused’s husband, Muhammad Aliff Aiman Zaini, 24, was sentenced to one year’s imprisonment after pleading guilty to receiving and disposing the gold bracelet at a pawn shop on Jalan Kiara 1, Kawasan Perniagaan Kiara Semenyih, Hulu Langat in Selangor at about 4pm on May 28.
Separately, the couple was also sentenced to five months’ jail effective from the date of their arrest on June 4, after pleading guilty before Magistrate Uthman Abd Ghani today to stealing various items belonging to a homestay that was valued at RM1,100.
The offence was committed at about 1am in a residential unit at a service apartment in Kota Laksamana here on April 26.
They were charged under Section 380 of the Penal Code read together with Section 34 of the same Code, which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years, a fine, and whipping for a second or subsequent offence, upon conviction.
