S'wak wants to develop aviation sector in collaboration with Holland, says state minister

State Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin (wearing a yellow striped tie) welcomes the Dutch delegation's courtesy visit.

KUCHING: Sarawak is looking to develop its aviation sector in collaboration with the Netherlands, with a particular focus on the proposed new Kuching international airport.

State Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin welcomed the Netherlands' interest and involvement in Sarawak's aviation infrastructure and development during a courtesy visit by a delegation of Dutch aviation industry representatives here on Wednesday (July 2).

The delegation was led by Dutch ambassador to Malaysia Jacques Werner.

A key highlight of the meeting was the introduction of Netherlands Airport Consultants (Naco), which has been appointed as the lead consultant for a feasibility study on the new Kuching international airport.

The study is being conducted in partnership with local consultant Jurutera Jasa Sdn Bhd and scheduled for completion within nine months.

"The development of a new international airport is crucial to support Sarawak's long-term economic growth and enhance regional connectivity," Lee said in a statement on Thursday (July 3).

"We are pleased to work with experienced international partners such as Naco to ensure this project is guided by global standards and best practices."

The feasibility study includes site evaluation, airspace analysis, demand forecasting, environmental and social impact assessments, economic and financial analysis, preliminary concept planning and regulatory compliance.

The meeting also explored broader areas of potential collaboration in airport design, operations and sustainable aviation practices.

This is in line with Sarawak's goal of becoming a regional transport and logistics hub through the development of an aerotropolis, the statement said.

"The visit reflects the strengthening of bilateral ties between Sarawak and the Netherlands and underscores the importance of international collaboration and expertise in advancing Sarawak's aerospace development and related industries," it added.
