Rape suspect jailed eight months for fleeing custody


SIBU: A rape suspect who escaped custody while under remand has been sentenced to eight months' jail.

On Wednesday (July 2), Magistrate Oon Kork Chern ordered the accused, a 38-year-old Indonesian named Buni, to serve the sentence from the date of his recapture on June 23.

He was charged under Section 224 of the Penal Code for escaping from lawful custody, which provides for a jail term of up to two years, or a fine, or both upon conviction.

According to the facts of the case, the accused had been remanded for investigation under Section 376(3) of the Penal Code for rape.

He escaped while being escorted by a police officer from the first floor to the lockup room on the ground floor of the central police station at about 4pm on June 21,

Following a police manhunt, he was rearrested two days later in front of a house in Jalan Terap, about 4km away.

At the time of his arrest, the suspect was still in handcuffs and dressed in purple lock-up attire.
