Mining bribery case: Dr Gunsalam urges PBS members to keep serving the people amid graft claims


PBS acting president Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam denies involvement in mining prospecting licence scandal.

KOTA KINABALU: Deputy Chief Minister II Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam, one of the latest Sabah leaders named in connection with the mineral prospecting licence controversy, has firmly denied any involvement in alleged bribery.

Describing a recent report by a news portal as “grossly irresponsible”, the state Housing and Local Government Minister and Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) acting president said the claim was made with malicious intent to tarnish his reputation.

“I firmly deny the allegations implicating me in the purported bribery scandal involving Sabah mineral mining licences," he said in a statement on Tuesday (July 2).

“I will not be distracted by any attempts to discredit me and remain sincerely committed to carrying out my responsibilities as a member of the Sabah Cabinet and as Kundasang assemblyman to the best of my ability,” he added.

The ongoing controversy surrounding the approval of mining prospecting licences has drawn national attention and prompted investigations by the authorities.

Dr Gunsalam urged party members and supporters to remain calm and united amid the controversy, reiterating PBS’ commitment to serving the people.

"Let us continue to work hard for the people. There is still much to do.

“I will face this situation with a clear heart and conscience. I appreciate the continued support and trust of the people,” he said.

Authorities have yet to confirm the full list of those under investigation, but several political figures have been mentioned in connection with the case.

Citing unnamed sources, apart from Dr Gunsalam, the portal also named Sabah STAR president Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan, his deputies Datuk Ellron Angin and Datuk Robert Tawik, as well as PBS president Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkil and the party’s deputy president Datuk Seri Jahid Jahim.
