Cops launch manhunt after shooting outside school in George Town

GEORGE TOWN: Police have launched a manhunt for two unidentified men who fired five shots at a man outside Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Nyior on Tuesday (July 1) evening.

Penang deputy police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the incident was reported around 5.40pm to the North Seberang Perai police headquarters, prompting officers to be immediately deployed to the scene.

"Initial investigations revealed that the victim was waiting inside a four-wheel drive vehicle to pick up his child outside the school when two men on a motorcycle suddenly opened fire, discharging five shots at the vehicle," he said in a statement on Tuesday (July 2).

DCP Mohd Alwi said the victim escaped unharmed in the incident, which occurred in a typically busy area where parents gather during school dismissal.

Forensic teams from the state police headquarters and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) from both the district and state levels were sent to assist in the investigation.

So far, the identities and motive of the suspects remain unknown.

He urged the public not to speculate or spread unverified information that could jeopardise the investigation or threaten public order.

"Anyone with information is urged to come forward and assist the investigation by contacting the investigating officer, Assistant Superintendent Shuheri Abd Rani, at 04-576 2222 ext. 2275, or by visiting the nearest police station."

The case is being investigated under Section 3 of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971 and Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.
