Participation of non-bumis still low, says ATM chief

KUALA LUMPUR: Calling for greater participation of non-bumiputra communities in the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM), Chief of Defence Forces Jen Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar says joining the military should be seen as a viable career choice.

Noting that the current representation among non-bumiputra is still low, he said a career in the armed forces offers a professional environment that is distinct from other fields.

“I urge all communities to consider joining the armed forces.

“This is where the real challenge begins and where one will experience the true meaning of professionalism,” Jen Mohd Nizam told reporters after the commissioning parade and presentation of appointment letters to 509 cadet officers at Kem Perdana in Sungai Besi here yesterday.

He did not indicate the number of non-bumiputra currently serving the armed forces but according to reports in 2023, the figure was 3%.

He said the ceremony served as official recognition for cadet officer who had successfully completed their military training and to mark the beginning of their service.

“It also underscores the armed forces commitment to nurturing professional, disciplined and high-integrity military leadership dedicated to safeguarding the country’s sovereignty,” Jen Mohd Nizam added.
