KUALA LUMPUR: Beginning July 1, My50 pass users no longer have to queue at Rapid KL counters to reload and activate their passes as it can be done via the Touch ’n Go e-wallet app, says Anthony Loke.
The Transport Minister said this is part of the government’s move to digitalise public transportation systems, and users who still want to use their physical MyKad and renew their My50 passes at Rapid KL counters will still be allowed to do so.
“Through the app, people can renew their My50 pass by using the C-fitted TnG card,” said Loke at KL Sentral yesterday.
Loke also revealed that the digitalisation effort will be expanded to the MyCity and MyTourist passes by the end of the year.
The RM50 unlimited monthly travel pass allows unlimited travel for commuters on rail and bus services operated by Prasarana Malaysia Bhd.
Last year, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the My50 travel pass has benefitted 180,000 bus and rail users in Klang Valley.
Presently, Loke said each My50 pass user will take between two-to-three minutes to renew their passes at the Rapid KL counters.
“Imagine if there are 15 customers at one time; waiting times can go up to 46 minutes.
“That’s why I always received complaints about long queues at various counters,” he said.
The digitalisation of the My50 pass, he said, will reduce long queues at Rapid KL counters.
“Public transportation is not just about providing enough trains or buses. Facilities such as ticket systems are an important element in setting up world-class public transportation.”
Loke said Prasarana collaborated with Touch ’n Go for six months and spent RM2.75bil to introduce the digital feature.
According to Loke, the digital feature uses the e-know-your-customer (EKYC) system and it is only available to Malaysians.
“More than 24 million Malaysians are registered under the EKYC system in this app, making Touch ’n Go the most suitable platform for this initiative,” he said.
Loke also urged public transport operators to continue exploring the innovation of advanced technological systems, such as adopting artificial intelligence technology in payment systems.
