PETALING JAYA: Police operations have led to the arrest of 36 foreigners suspected of extremist and militant activities.
In a statement on Friday (June 27), Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the operation this week resulted in the arrest of 36 Bangladesh nationals allegedly involved in radical militant actions.
"This planned security operation started on April 24 and was executed in three phases in Selangor and Johor. Intelligence efforts and actions from the Special Branch revealed that this group was introducing Islamic State ideology into the country," he said.
Five of the suspects have been charged in Shah Alam and Johor Baru, while 15 have been issued deportation orders.
A further 16 are currently still under investigation for their roles in this militant movement.
The group is reported to have created a recruitment cell within their community to indoctrinate radical beliefs, collect funds for terrorist operations, and attempt to topple the government in their home country.
"I would like to emphasise that Malaysia will not become a refuge, let alone a battleground, for any foreign extremist movement.
"The actions taken demonstrate that the government is very serious and will not tolerate any elements that could threaten national security.
"This success also proves the efficiency and professionalism of the national security forces, especially the police, in safeguarding the nation's sovereignty, harmony, and public order," he said.
