Man fined RM5,500 for reckless driving incident in JB

JOHOR BARU: A 50-year-old man has been fined RM5,500 by the Magistrate’s Court for driving a 4x4 pick-up recklessly and causing damage to another vehicle.

Muhammad Firdaus Abdullah was found guilty of driving negligently along Jalan Susur 6, Jalan Tun Razak on June 22.

According to the charge sheet, he drove without due care and full attention, thereby endangering other road users.

In a video that has gone viral, he was seen repeatedly reversing his vehicle into another car before driving away from the scene.

He was charged under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries a maximum jail term of 12 months and a fine between RM5,000 and RM10,000 upon conviction.

Muhammad Firdaus pleaded guilty when the charge was read to him in court but repeatedly interrupted the proceedings in an attempt to explain what caused the conflict.

In mitigation, he appealed for a minimal penalty, stating that he is currently unemployed and caring for his wife and seven school-going children.

Magistrate Nur Fatin Mohamad Farid fined him RM5,500, in default of six months' imprisonment, and ordered his driving licence to be endorsed.

Deputy public prosecutor Amirah Tasnim Saleh led the prosecution.
