AKPS to get tough on officers who use fake MCs, abuse medical leave

PUTRAJAYA: Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) officers who abuse medical leave or use fake medical certificates (MCs) to avoid work will face disciplinary action, says director-general Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain.

He said the agency was introducing a stricter culture of discipline, with the chain of command forming the backbone of its operations.

He said officers should accept reprimands professionally instead of taking medical leave the following day.

"We want a culture where officers who are reprimanded do not sulk or turn up the next day with a medical certificate," he said during the agency's monthly assembly here on Wednesday (July 1).

Comm Shuhaily warned that any private clinic found issuing fake MCs would be reported to the police.

He said weak discipline had affected the effectiveness of enforcement agencies in the past, particularly when supervisors were reluctant to reprimand subordinates for fear of being left short-handed after officers took unnecessary medical leave.

"This is the culture we want to change. I need the commitment of every officer to restore the dignity of those serving on the front line at the country's entry points and rebuild public confidence in this agency," he said.

He said the stricter disciplinary culture was part of AKPS' transformation following the implementation of its own service scheme, adding that professionalism, integrity and accountability must become the agency's core values.
