KUALA LUMPUR: Five PKR lawmakers have called for the findings of the investigation into former Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief Tan Sri Azam Baki's shareholdings be disclosed to the public.
Subang MP Wong Chen said the government should disclose the outcome of the investigations into Azam's shareholdings, arguing that his retirement in May should not bring the matter to a close.
"We urged for the outcome of the investigation conducted by the government to be made public," he told a press conference at the Parliament's media centre on Wednesday (July 1).
Wong was speaking at a joint press conference with fellow PKR lawmakers Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim and Sungai Siput MP S. Kesavan.
Others who signed the statement were Ampang MP Rodziah Ismail and Petaling Jaya MP Lee Chean Chung.
The group also called for the setting up of a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into the matter.
On June 30, a coalition of civil society groups urged the government to create a RCI into alleged “corporate mafia” activities and reform the governance of the MACC.
The RCI Now Secretariat submitted a memorandum to several MPs at the entrance of Parliament House, calling for sweeping reforms to strengthen anti-corruption institutions.
The “corporate mafia” refers to allegations that senior MACC officers orchestrate intimidation schemes, supposedly to pressure executives and shareholders of public-listed firms to resign or sell their shares at steep discounts to a network of connected businessmen.
MACC has denied the claims, labelling them as an attempt to tarnish the credibility of its investigations and enforcement actions.
