Police investigating alleged molestation of teen in viral video

KOTA KINABALU: Police have confirmed receiving a report over a viral video involving an alleged sexual act against a minor in Putatan, near here.

The 1-minute-33-second video, which began circulating early Saturday (June 21), shows a woman confronting a man, believed to be a sundry shop owner or caretaker, accusing him of molesting her 16-year-old daughter.

She was heard telling the man that what he did was a crime and that she would be making a police report against him, adding that her daughter, who had come home crying, would not lie as she is a grown person.

Penampang district police chief Supt Sammy Newton said the police received the report around 8.09pm on Saturday (June 21).

The case has since been classified under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which carries a jail term of up to 20 years and liability or a fine on conviction, if found guilty.

“The case involves a 16-year-old female student and took place in the Putatan area,” he said in a statement on Sunday (June 22).

He added that police are actively tracking down the suspect.

“This case is still under investigation, and we urge the public not to speculate or spread unverified information on social media, as it could disrupt the investigation and compromise the victim’s rights,” said Newton.

He urged the public to contact the investigating officer, Insp Kalista Demson, at 011-3398 0319 with any relevant information to help investigations.
