Senior citizen arrested over dragging of dog video

SUNGAI PETANI: A senior citizen was arrested for alleged animal cruelty after he was seen in a video dragging a dog chained to his motorcycle.

Kuala Muda OCPD Asst Comm Hanyan Ramlan said the 82-year-old suspect was apprehended at about 8pm on Monday in front of a house in Bandar Puteri Jaya here.

“Police seized a motorcycle, helmets and several keys believed to belong to the suspect,” he said in a statement.

After interrogations, it was found that the suspect is from Kuala Ketil, Baling, and that he is senile and tends to be forgetful, ACP Hanyan added.

He said the suspect admitted that the dog was his pet but could not remember why he chained it to the motorcycle.

“The suspect only realised his actions when he was stopped by the public during the incident,” he added.

ACP Hanyan said the dog had been sent to a veterinary clinic for treatment.

Due to his age and health, the suspect was released on police bail, though ACP Hanyan said investigations were still ongoing.

In a 48-second clip which went viral on June 14, the visibly injured dog is seen lying on the road with its neck chained to the back of a motorcycle before a passerby comes to unchain and help it up.

Several others are also seen confronting the motorist.
