Truck driver and assistant killed in highway crash

BATU PAHAT: A lorry driver and his assistant were killed instantly in a three-vehicle collision along the North-South Expressway near here on Thursday.

Batu Pahat OCPD Asst Comm Shahrul­anuar Mushaddat Abdullah Sani said the accident occurred at KM81.9 of the Ayer Hitam-Batu Pahat southbound stretch at about 8.30am.

“A lorry transporting electronic goods crashed into the rear of another lorry carrying wood, which then collided with an oil tanker,” he said in a statement.

The impact of the crash caused fatal injuries to the driver and his assistant, who were pronounced dead at the scene by a medical officer from the Yong Peng health clinic.

They were identified as R. Pubalan, 45, from Sungai Petani, Kedah, and 35-year-old assistant R. Sivasanthiran from Bedong, Kedah.

The 37-year-old driver of the wood-laden lorry sustained only minor injuries and was taken to Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital.

The oil tanker driver, aged 42, was unharmed.

The case is being probed under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving.
