Police obtaining witness statements to wrap up slapping case probe

KUANTAN: Pahang police will record the statements of several witnesses to complete its investigation into claims that a public university student was slapped by a politician in Janda Baik, Bentong.

Pahang police chief Datuk Seri Yahaya Othman said the student, 23, lodged a police report at 12.11pm on Saturday (May 30) about the incident that allegedly occurred on May 20 during a university programme.

"Preliminary investigations revealed a man, 62, a politician, allegedly slapped the victim in front of several individuals.

"The victim lodged a police report as he was unsatisfied with the politician's actions but did not suffer serious injuries," he said in a statement on Tuesday (June 2), adding that they also received a report by the politician about the incident at about 7pm on Monday (June 1).

"The police have taken the statements of both the suspect and the victim and will record statements from several other witnesses to complete the investigation," he said.

The case, which is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code, will be referred to the deputy public prosecutor soon, he added. – Bernama
