Repair, upgrade Sabah infrastructure fairly, no political prejudice, Bung urges

KOTA KINABALU: Repair and upgrading of roads and infrastructure in Sabah has to be done fairly, without political prejudice, says Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin.

In reminding the state and federal governments of their duties to the people, the Kinabatangan MP said matters such as road repairs and upgrading concern the safety and convenience of road users, regardless of their political inclination.

As such, the Lamag assemblyman questioned why it seemed like several stretches of roads in his constituency in Kinabatangan did not get any government attention for repairs.

“I see that for many parts of Sabah, repair and upgrading works are being done including the construction of the Pan Borneo Highway,” Bung said in a statement Tuesday (June 3).

“Unfortunately, it is not the same in my area specifically around Bukit Garam, Sukau and the main route from Sandakan to Lahad Datu which passes by Kinabatangan as no attention is given in these areas," he claimed.

He said the roads in these areas were in bad shape with potholes and other hazards to users.

“This situation makes me wonder if there are elements of politics in the distribution of works. Is my area being disregarded due to political differences?” Bung asked, adding that this should not have happened.

He said priority of repairs or any works should be given based on severity and needs, safety and wellbeing of the residents - not the assemblymen.

Bung said the job lies under the power of local authorities as state agencies such as the Sabah Works Department.

He said terrible road conditions do not only anger users, but endanger their lives.

“Therefore, I urge for the Sabah government to immediately carry out repair and maintenance works on roads in Kinabatangan, including from the Bukit Garam township roundabout and the area heading to the Sukau intersection, without any form of political discrimination,” he stressed.

“Do not use basic infrastructure as a political weapon. The people deserve to enjoy safe and comfortable infrastructure and amenities regardless of their area’s political background,” added Bung.
