Cops nab suspect in Perak Tengah murder

IPOH: Police have arrested the suspect wanted for the murder of a 29-year-old man at Jalan Trans Perak in Perak Tengah.

Perak police chief Comm Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the 30-year-old man was caught at the Perlis Sentral Bus Terminal in Kangar at 3.45pm on Thursday (June 11) following a tip-off.

Comm Alwi said the suspect was arrested by a team from the Perak and Perlis contingents.

"We also seized a knife that had been dumped in a dustbin in Kangar.

"The rape and murder case has been solved with the arrest," he told a press conference at the Perak police officers' mess hall here on Friday (June 12).

He had earlier witnessed the handover of duties ceremony between outgoing state police Commercial Crime Investigation chief Asst Comm Mohd Fahmi Visuvanathan Abdullah and acting chief Supt Mohd Ridzuan Nor Ihsan.

It was reported earlier that the murder was committed at about 5am on Wednesday (June 10) and the victim was pronounced dead at a clinic in Kampung Gajah.

Comm Alwi said investigations found that the suspect also allegedly raped his 25-year-old ex-girlfriend, the victim's partner, at about 9am on Tuesday (June 9).

He said they met near a padi field on Jalan Trans Perak to discuss their relationship before the suspect allegedly threatened and raped the woman in a car.

"When the suspect sent the woman home at 5am on June 10, he was confronted by the victim.

"A car chase ensued, before the victim rammed his car into the suspect's vehicle.

"After both men got out of their vehicles, the suspect is believed to have attacked and stabbed the victim in the abdomen.

"He then fled in the victim's car and abandoned it at Persiaran Batu Gajah Perdana in Batu Gajah," he added.

Comm Alwi said the suspect has been detained under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

The case is being investigated under Sections 302 and 376 of the Penal Code for murder and rape respectively.

"If found guilty, he could face the death penalty, or up to 40 years in jail and caned," Comm Alwi said, adding that the motive for the murder was believed to be jealousy.
