Woo gives police statement over social media post of Razman clown pic

IPOH: Police have questioned Perak state executive council member Woo Kah Leong over a photo of state Opposition Leader Razman Zakaria edited to resemble a clown.

Woo, who is the Pasir Berdamar assemblyman, said statements were taken by two policemen from the Gerik district police headquarters on Monday (June 2).

He said the statements were recorded at his office at the state secretariat building here, with the presence of his lawyer Syahredzan Johan, who is also the Bangi MP.

The DAP Socialist Youth (Dapsy) chief’s mobile phone and SIM card were also confiscated.

“I am not sure when or who lodged a report, but I was told a report was made in Lenggong,” he told a press conference at the state DAP headquarters here on Sunday.

Gerik acting OCPD Deputy Supt Muhammad Firdaus Abdullah confirmed that a statement was recorded as part of standard investigation procedures.

On April 21, Razman had alleged on his Facebook that Woo used his photo without permission, editing it to resemble a clown, which he described as offensive and insulting.

Razman had demanded a public apology from Woo during the state assembly sitting.

The Gunung Semanggol assemblyman, who had been suspended from the assembly for six months, had expressed regret over Woo’s actions.

“In Malaysia, we have artists like Zunar and Fahmi Reza who regularly criticise all parties, including DAP and Pakatan Harapan, yet no DAP leader has ever filed police reports over it.

“Filing a police report over a caricature is an attack on freedom of expression, as a caricature is not the same as defamation,” he said.

Syahredzan said the officers recorded Woo’s statements, and full cooperation was given.

“We were also informed that if further investigation is needed, we will be contacted.

“We don’t know the exact date, and who specifically made the report, whether Razman himself or someone on his behalf,” he said.
