Move forward with compassion, reject divisive politics, says Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians must come together to reject divisive narratives driven by a segment of vocal minorities to end politics built on hatred and discord, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister said that it is time for the majority of Malaysians to take a stand and lead from their conscience instead of allowing fear, hatred and racial rhetoric to dominate public discourse.

“It is time for Malaysians to decide. Enough with politics built on hatred and discord.

“Let the majority say enough and move forward wisely and compassionately so that we improve the lives of all Malaysians,” he said during his keynote speech at the National Wesak Day Conference 2026 at Menara Ken here, on Saturday (May 23).

Elaborating further, Anwar said a minority of individuals have been spreading fear, hatred and division as if they appear to represent the general views of the public.

“This is like a tyranny of the minority. A small group is forcing the larger majority into submission.

“Most Malaysians, the Malays, Chinese, Indians and other are good people. The majority are decent people. But today, the loudest voices often belong to those who are angry, divisive and provocative.

“They create hostility and stir emotions. That does not reflect who Malaysians truly are,” he said.

Anwar also added that the Madani concept was not introducing a new national direction but continuing the aspirations laid down at the country’s founding, centred on values, ethics and compassion.

While countries around the world focused on development, technology and innovation, he said Malaysia had chosen to emphasise values and morality alongside economic progress.

“We speak about development, digitalisation, energy transition and artificial intelligence, but we must remain firm in our beliefs, values and ethics,” he said.
