29 escape from burning express bus

Total loss: The charred remains of the express bus.

IPOH: Twenty-eight passengers and the driver of an express bus had a close shave when the bus they were travelling in caught fire during an accident at KM406 (northbound) of the North-South Expressway near Kamunting.

In the Thursday evening incident, the express bus is believed to have dragged a motorcycle which had skidded earlier.

The accident triggered a fire on the bus.

The motorcyclist suffered minor injuries and was sent to hospital, while all the passengers and the driver escaped unhurt.

Fire and Rescue Department’s Perak operations division assistant director Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad said they received a call at 9.50pm before dispatching teams from the Kamunting and Taiping stations to the scene.

“The bus is estimated to be 90% destroyed.

“All 28 passengers on board were safely evacuated before firemen reached the location,” Sabarodzi said in a statement to Bernama yesterday.
