JOHOR BARU: PKR should prioritise trustworthy, hardworking, community-based individuals as candidates in the Sabah state election.
Sabah PKR delegate Zaidi Jatil said the party's success in the state election depends not only on its machinery or national sentiment but also on the candidates' appeal and integrity.
"Ultimately, victory depends on who we offer to the people. Candidates are not just symbols of the party but reflections of our values and struggle," he added.
Zaidi said this during the debate session at the PKR national congress at the Persada International Convention Centre on Saturday (May 24).
He said ethnic and religious diversity is deeply woven into Sabah society, and added that candidates must reflect this pluralism while aligning with the people's aspirations.
"Our candidates must be trusted and hardworking individuals who are loved by the public, rather than smooth talkers who give hope but turn out to be empty vessels. They should be visible on the ground, listening to people's concerns, and able to lead with sincerity," he said.
Zaidi added that PKR’s longstanding multiracial and multi-faith approach, saying it gives the party a unique advantage in Sabah and said that within PKR, anyone can become a leader and serve both the party and the people regardless of race or religion.
He added that this makes the party naturally closer to Sabah’s diverse communities.
"We want candidates who work, not just show up during campaigns, and leaders with integrity, not those who compromise with power for personal gain," he said.
Zaidi also reminded PKR leaders of Sabah’s unique political landscape, where independent candidates often perform strongly due to voter preference for credible individuals over party affiliation.
"Do not underestimate the candidate factor. Sabah has seen many independent candidates win because of their personal credibility. The people of Sabah are wise because they do not vote for a symbol alone but for someone they trust," he added.
