300,000 hit by unscheduled water cut in JB


JOHOR BARU: An estimated 300,000 consumers here are experiencing unplanned water disruptions because of faulty pumps at the Sungai Johor water treatment plant.

Water operator Ranhill SAJ said the motor for all six raw water pumps at the were damaged after being submerged during heavy rain on Tuesday (May 20).

Its corporate communications head Ahmad Asri Kalbi said when contacted that repairs are at 30% as of Wednesday (May 21) afternoon and the pumps are being restarted in stages to process raw water.

“The repair works are expected to be completed by midnight, and water supply will be restored in phases.

“We have also dispatched 16 water tankers to critical places such as hospitals and dialysis centres,” he added.

According to the company's Facebook page, the affected locations include the city area, Tebrau, Tiram, Kempas, Skudai, Iskandar Puteri and Bukit Indah, impacting about 100,000 account holders involving an estimated 300,000 people.

The unplanned water disruption has caught residents, businesses and factories off guard.

At the time of writing, the water supply in many of the affected areas has yet to be restored.
