PIA expansion work set to meet end-of-year target

GEORGE TOWN: Phase One of the Penang International Airport (PIA) expansion project is expected to be completed by the end of this year, with work progress now inching towards 38%.

State infrastructure, transport and digital committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari said Work Package (WP1) has surpassed the 37% mark.

“This package encompasses critical enabling, upgrading and construction works, including the ancillary building, the air traffic control tower, the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia office, the aviation security tower, the local infrastructure, and substations,” he said, adding that physical construction for WP2 began last month.

“The work in WP2 focuses on upgrading the airport apron, taxiway, airside drainage, utilities diversion and other related infrastructure,” he said.

The work of WP2 was awarded to Acre Works Sdn Bhd in December 2024, with a contract value of RM254.6mil.

Meanwhile, tender for the physical work of WP3, involving the expansion of a new passenger terminal building, would be called in June.

The new PIA terminal is expected to be operational by 2027, with full completion targeted for 2028.

In February 2024, Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced that the government had approved the expansion project, which was also mentioned by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim when tabling Budget 2025 on Oct 18, 2024.
