Subcontractor claims trial to dealing in firearms, possession of ammunition


KANGAR: A subcontractor pleaded not guilty at the Sessions Court here to charges of dealing in three firearms and possessing various imitation firearms and ammunition without lawful authority earlier this month.

Yeong Kok Hoong, 54, entered the plea after the charges were read before Judge Sharifah Norazlita Syed Salim Idid.

Under the first charge, he was accused of dealing in three firearms, namely a CZ750 D, a Stoeger STR-9 and a Cougar 8000 FT, at a house in Jalan Repoh, Taman Repoh here at 12.30pm on July 8.

The charge was framed under Section 7(1) of the Firearms (Increased Penalties) Act 1971, which provides for imprisonment of not less than 30 years and not more than 40 years, and a minimum of six strokes of the cane, upon conviction.

Under the second charge, the subcontractor was accused of possessing, without lawful authority, an Airsoft rifle (4.5mm) and an Airsoft pistol (4.5mm) at the same location, time and date.

He was charged under Section 8(a) of the Arms Act 1960 (Act 206), which carries a penalty of imprisonment for up to seven years, a fine of up to RM10,000, or both, upon conviction.

Under the third charge, he was accused of possessing, without lawful authority, seven imitation Airsoft pistols (4.5mm) at the same location, time and date as stated in the first and second charges. The charge was framed under Section 36(1) of Act 206.

If convicted, he faces imprisonment for up to one year, a fine of up to RM5,000, or both.

In the same proceedings, he also pleaded not guilty to possessing without lawful authority 212 rounds of various types of ammunition, including RC2 Competition, Bornaghi 12 Bore and Remington 12 Bore cartridges.

He was also charged with possessing 8,939 spent cartridge casings of 9mm, .22 and .38 calibre at the same place and time, under Section 8(a) of the Arms Act 1960.

The judge denied bail on all charges and fixed Aug 14 for further mention of the case.

The prosecution was conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Nabilah Ahmad Poad, while the accused was represented by lawyer Tan Yi Jie.- Bernama
