Woman from Johor dies while performing haj

MECCA: A 47-year-old woman from Baru Pahat, Johor has died in Mecca, says Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar.

The Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) said the deceased, Norizah Tambonan Nordin, suffered a heart attack and died at the Jiwar Hospital here on Friday (May 16).

"On behalf of Tabung Haji and the government, I extend our condolences to her family.

"The Mecca operations information centre has also informed her next-of-kin back in Malaysia and has managed all necessary arrangements, including burial in the Holy Land," he said in a statement on Saturday (May 17).

He added that the Tabung Haji chief executive officer visited Norizah's family in Batu Pahat to convey his condolences.

He also said that the badal haj (haj on behalf of someone else) would be performed for the deceased.

A total of 31,600 pilgrims from Malaysia will be performing their haj this year.
