Political pacts and slogans should be centred on Sabahans' needs, says Upko president

KOTA KINABALU: Local aspirations and sentiments should be the basis for any political pact or slogans used in Sabah, says Upko.

I do not see any problem with local parties wanting to forge collaborations with any national parties or even parties from outside Malaysia that practise democracy,” says its president, Datuk Ewon Benedick.

Ewon also said that he did not see any fault in the continued usage of slogans such as ‘Sabah for Sabahan’ as they symbolised patriotism.

However, he added that a slogan, no matter how strong it sounded, remained just a string of words if decades-old issues faced by the people were not solved.

“Therefore, for the constituencies I represent, I would like to form better strengths by working with other parties, including cooperative movements, to solve problems faced by the community because there is a limit to an assemblyman’s allocation,” he said.
