Court charges cafe worker, 20, with sexual assault of school girl

SEREMBAN: A 20-year-old part-time cafe worker pleaded guilty at the Sessions Court here to two charges of committing sexual assault against a secondary school girl.

The accused, who was three months short of his 18th birthday when the crimes were committed, did not contest the charges after these were read to him before judge Surita Budin on Wednesday (May 14).

He was charged with committing the offences in a classroom of a government school here around 3.05pm on Nov 22, 2023. The victim was then 17 years and five months old.

The accused was charged under sections 14(a) and (b) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, both of which provide for a jail term of up to 20 years and whipping upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Norazihah Asmuni then told the court that the prosecution was offering the accused bail of RM20,000 for each charge pending sentencing at a later date.

She said the accused should also stay away from the victim and to report at the nearest police station till the case is disposed of.

Lawyer for the accused, Shameera Abdul Hami,d pleaded for a lower amount as the accused only worked as a part-time worker.

She said the accused was a juvenile when the crimes were committed.

Judge Surita then fixed bail at RM10,000 with one surety for both charges and allowed the other application by the prosecution.

She fixed June 20 for the tabling of a probationary report and sentencing.
