MetMalaysia issues thunderstorm warning for 12 states, KL and Putrajaya


KUALA LUMPUR: Thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds are forecasted across various regions in Malaysia, with warnings in effect until 5pm on Thursday (May 8), said the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) in a post on its Facebook page.

In Perlis and Kedah, the entire state is on alert.

Penang is also expected to experience severe weather.

In Perak, the affected districts include Kerian, Larut, Matang and Selama, Hulu Perak, Kuala Kangsar, Kinta, Kampar, Batang Padang, and Muallim.

Kelantan regions such as Kota Bharu, Jeli, Bachok, Machang, Pasir Puteh, and Kuala Krai are included in the warning.

In Terengganu, areas like Besut, Hulu Terengganu, Marang, and Dungun are forecasted to be affected.

Pahang regions including Cameron Highlands, Lipis, Raub, Jerantut, Bentong, Temerloh, Pekan, and Rompin are on alert.

Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya are also expected to experience severe weather conditions.

In Negeri Sembilan, districts such as Jelebu, Seremban, Kuala Pilah, Rembau, Jempol, and Tampin are under the warning.

Johor regions including Segamat, Batu Pahat, Kluang, Mersing, Pontian, and Kota Tinggi are expected to face adverse conditions.

In Sarawak, areas such as Sibu (Selangau), Mukah (Mukah), Bintulu, and Miri (Subis, Beluru, Miri, and Marudi) are on alert.

In Sabah, the Interior (Kuala Penyu, Beaufort, Keningau, and Tambunan), West Coast (Ranau and Kota Belud), Tawau (Tawau, Semporna, and Lahad Datu), Sandakan (Tongod), and Kudat are expected to experience severe weather.

MetMalaysia issues these warnings when thunderstorms with rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour are imminent or expected to persist for more than an hour.

These are short-term warnings, valid for no more than six hours from issuance.
