Health Ministry to table working papers on drug price display, private GP fees within next two weeks

PUTRAJAYA: The Health Ministry will table the working papers on the medicine price display order and consultation fees for private general practitioners (GPs) within the next couple of weeks, says Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.

Fahmi, who is the Communications Minister and government spokesperson, added that the Health Ministry had been asked to explain the issues during the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday (May 7).

“The Prime Minister has instructed Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad to urgently look into the issue raised by private medical practitioners including the use of the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 (Act 723) under the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry,” he said at the post-Cabinet press conference here today.

Fahmi also said the Cabinet has noted the review of consultation charges at private clinics, adding that the issue will also be studied.

“We expect these matters to be decided by the Cabinet within one to two weeks. Several immediate actions have also been taken to ensure that the move of price display can be implemented smoothly,” he added.

Yesterday, a group of about 300 doctors gathered in front of the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) here in protest of the new law mandating the display of price lists at private healthcare facilities.
