Floods: 22 schools in Beaufort forced to close


KOTA KINABALU: Classrooms at SK Pintas in Beaufort have been left flooded after days of heavy rain, with furniture partially submerged and textbooks ruined.

SK Pintas was one of 22 schools in the area forced to close because of the bad weather.

According to Sabah Education Department director Datuk Raisin Saidin, the closures were necessary either because the school grounds were underwater or roads leading to the schools were cut off.

“Most schools had to close because of flooding. Four others were closed because the roads were blocked,” he said in a statement on Monday (May 5).

The schools with road access issues are SK Kepawa, SK St John, SK Lajau and SK Padas Damit.

Among the flooded schools are SK Suasa, SK Klias Baru, SJKC Kung Ming, SK Kebulu, SK Luagan, SMK St Paul and SK Rancangan Klias.

At SK Suasa, teachers said it was disheartening to see furniture overturned and schoolbooks floating in dirty water.

Raisin said students will need to make up for the missed classes.

“Lessons missed... will be replaced on Saturdays, depending on how many days each school was closed,” he said.
