14-vehicle pile-up snarls traffic on BKE

Bumper to bumper: Fourteen vehicles were involved in an accident along the BKE towards Butterworth.

BUTTERWORTH: A 14-vehicle pile-up along the Butterworth-Kulim Expressway (BKE) was due to a car stopping abruptly after a traffic congestion, says police.

This resulted in a standstill during the morning rush hour.

Central Seberang Perai OCPD Asst Comm Helmi Aris said the incident occurred on the Butterworth-bound side of the expressway.

“We received a call at around 7.10am yesterday, alerting the police of an accident involving 12 cars and two motorcycles.

“Initial investigations showed it occurred when a car suddenly stopped along the expressway, resulting in a rear-end collision with the other vehicles trailing it,” he said in a statement.

Following the pile-up, two motorcyclists who were passing by also collided into each other.

“Eight of the drivers sustained minor injuries. The two motorcyclists were also injured.

“All of them received treatment at Hospital Seberang Jaya.”

ACP Helmi said the case is being investigated under Rule 10 of Road Traffic Regulations 1959, which prohibits drivers from failing to exercise control over their vehicle’s movements.

Many videos of the pile-up have been shared online, showing several cars involved in the crash yesterday morning.

Cars on the extreme right lane are seen crashing into each other, resulting in multiple vehicles requiring towing.
